WAUKESHA - Freshman post player Kylah Schmidt from Slinger scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds as the UWM-Waukesha women's basketball team lost to defending WCC state champion UW-Marathon 61-31 in a season-opening nonconference game Saturday.
It was the home opener for UWM-Waukesha, which made three baskets from 3-point range and just 4 of 14 free throws in the rematch of last year's WCC state championship game.
UW-Marathon outscored the Cougars 23-11 in the first half and responded with what proved to be a decisive 25-12 run in the third quarter to pull away.
Sophomore guard/forward Taylor Peterson from Mukwonago followed with seven points and eight rebounds for the Cougars, who outrebounded UW-Marathon 55-48 in the contest. Freshman guard Aleah Herron from Milwaukee Rufus King contributed six points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Sophomore guard/forward Bri Jashinsky from Sussex Hamilton chipped in six points with two 3-pointers, three rebounds and a steal. Sophomore post player Ariel Gonzales from Milwaukee Lutheran had four points, 12 rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard Rataeshia Hartfield from Milwaukee Rufus King added a team-high 14 rebounds.
Freshman guard/forward Chelsey Gliniecki finished with a game-high 22 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and four assists for UW-Marathon, which converted eight 3-pointers and 7 of 12 free throws.
