MARINETTE - Sophomore wing Ariel Gonzales from Milwaukee Lutheran registered a double-double by finishing with a game-high 17 points, including 6 of 10 free throws, 10 rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot as the UWM-Waukesha women's basketball team lost to traditional league powerhouse UW-Marinette 74-35 in a Wisconsin Collegiate Conference game Saturday, Feb. 2.
It was the second consecutive conference loss for UWM-Waukesha, which dropped to 3-3 in the league standings and 4-11 overall.
UW-Fond du Lac is currently in sole possession of first place (5-0), followed by UW-Marinette in second (4-1), third-place UW-Marathon (4-2) and fourth-place UW-Waukesha (3-3).
UWM-Waukesha was outscored 31-14 in the first half, including what became a decisive 21-9 margin in the opening quarter.
Freshman post player Kylah Schmidt from Slinger followed with six points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and a blocked shot for the Cougars, who converted 10 of 18 free throws but just one 3-pointer in the contest. Sophomore guard Bri Jashinsky from Sussex Hamilton and sophomore guard Shay Trammel from Milwaukee Bay View each added four points.
UWM-Waukesha outrebounded the Buccaneers 42-41.
Freshman forward Brianne Burnett had a team-high 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots to lead UW-Marinette, which made six 3-pointers and 11 of 23 free throws. Sophomore guard Jordan Miller and freshman guard McKenzie Bebo each contributed 11 points with sophomore guard Morgan Roman adding a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and a steal.
